| Environmental Pollution Environmental pollution means the pollution of water,air and other natural resourees of our surroundings. Water pollution is caused by people as well as industries. People throw garbage into water ways. Waste water is a major issue of concern in Sri Lanka. Textile waste water containing dye and industrial wastewater containing organic materials have caused many environmental and health problems. Kelaniya River, Beira lake, Bolgoda lake, Lunawa lagoon are examples of water pollution. A number of people get drinking water from rivers and tanks. Fish live in water and birds and other animals hunt for water to drink and bathe. Typhoid fever, food poisoning, amoebiasis, intestinal infections, malaria are caused by water pollution. Fish and aquatic life is threatened. Bird and animals die due to polluted water. |
 Air Pollution |
| Air pollution is caused by various gases, smoke, released by vehicles and other industrial substances. Air pollution creates many health problems such as respiratory illnesses asthma, cancer etc. Air pollution has caused damage to the ozone layer. Air pollution comes from factories and power plants that burn coal and oil. Smoke from factories and power plants can mix with water in the air to make acid rain. Air pollution also comes from cars and other vehicles that burn gasoline. |
 Land Pollution |
| Land pollution is pollution of soil and land. Polythene causes land and water pollution. Insecticides, pesticides causes soil pollution. Soil pollution can come from chemicals used on farms to kill insects and other pests. Pollutants can also seep from garbage dumps into the nearby soil and water. |

| How can we stop Pollution ? People should stop polluting the environment. People should be educated about the hazards of environmental pollution . Laws should be enforced where dumping of wastes, releasing of gases and other industrial substances. Recycling of plastics,paper,glass bottles,metal cans should be encouraged. |
